Site Anatomy

What's That Thing Called?

Here we will go over the basic anatomy of a Drupal site. Learning what different sections of these pages are called will help you comprehend other documentation and user guides offered on our site, and will help you describe problems to us if you get stuck on something.

University housing home page with the highlighted header.
The header displays main Cal Poly logo with hyperlink to calpoly.edu, as well as the Department's name with customizable hyperlink. We advise you to set this link to point to your department's home page. The text underneath the department name can be used to display your department's tagline, motto, or slogan. If you do not want to use this area, simply delete the existing text and leave it empty. The Cal Poly template no longer allows the addition of a department logo in the header.

The main menu is a menu that will be displayed throughout your site. We recommend that you only include important navigation menu items on this menu, as shown in the figure above.

The search box uses Google Search appliance provided by Cal Poly ITS (Information Technology Services) to search your department site. Please note that the search box has been relocated to the top right corner of the page with the new responsive theme update.

Hero Rotator

The hero rotator displays slides with images and related information with links that rotate automatically.

Widgets

Widgets are pre-formatted blocks that support various types of media and text. They are designed to show links, news, images, and other items in an organized and visually-appealing fashion.

The footer displays important school-wide links and social media icons for the department. Cal Poly ITS advises users not to modify anything other than the social media icons in the footer.
